I say this as a native New Yorker who has experience teaching mathematics at the national university of the United Arab Emirates. My students there included young people from around the Islamic world, men and women, rich and poor. Some were kind, some were jerks, just like my American students here in Arizona. I listened to them and I talked to them. I taught them as much about being American as they taught me about being Muslim.
People around the world want to manage their own destiny. Those who are drowning in hopelessness will cling in desperation to the first branch offered to them. If we allow that branch to come from violent extremists, they will be lost forever to modern global civilization.
The best way to undermine the recruitment of young people into the cause of extreme violence is to ensure their employment in respectable middle class professions. It's not about the cash, but about the dignity that follows only from self-sufficiency and hope.
